Last year, eight local charities came together to demonstrate the powerful difference a gift in a Will can make to their work in and around Winchester. Following the success of the inaugural campaign, the group will be hosting an expanded programme of events in April designed to highlight the importance of having a Will in place and the huge difference a legacy can make for local charities.

Legacy Action Week will take place from Monday 20 April to Friday 24 April and the participating charities have once again partnered with local solicitors and wealth management organisations to provide free, accessible support and guidance for anyone looking to take the first steps towards making or updating a Will.
Iain Steel, independent chair of Legacy Action Week, said: “Legacy Action Week provides an invaluable opportunity for Winchester’s small charities to showcase the meaningful difference they make within the local community, and to highlight that their vital work is made possible only through the generosity of local people.”
“Many people delay making a Will for a variety of reasons, yet it is one of the most important documents you will ever create. It deserves careful consideration, as the consequences of not having a Will can be significant for those you leave behind. That is why, once again this year, we have partnered with trusted local organisations who can offer expert guidance and help individuals take the first steps.”
This year’s programme includes a range of free events across the city, including The Later Years, a free talk taking place at The Arc on Monday 20 April. The event will be hosted by Sir Peter Thornton KC, a distinguished legal expert and author of The Later Years: The Simple Guide to Organising the Rest of Your Life. Sir Peter will offer an informative and accessible guide to later life, outlining the practical steps older people can take to put their affairs in order.

The popular Legacy Action Week drop-in event will also return in 2026, taking place at Chesil House on Wednesday 22 April. Legacy Action Week charities and legal experts will be on hand throughout the day to talk about the impact a legacy can have and answer your questions. Visitors will also be able to attend a series of short ‘DED Talks’, designed to demystify the process of making a Will.
“The 20-minute DED Talks will cover topics such as choosing executors, understanding inheritance tax, and leaving a gift to charity,” said Iain Steel. “These expert-led sessions are designed to answer common questions and help people feel more confident about getting started. They’re free to attend and everyone is welcome.”
In addition to the central events, participating charities will be hosting their own activities across the local area giving people the chance to learn more about their work and the impact that charitable legacies can have.
This year, the charities are proud to be supported by local organisations including Brewin Dolphin, Dutton Gregory, Godwins, Shentons, Trethowans and TMC Financial Consultancy, all of whom will be available to speak with attendees at the drop-in event on Wednesday 22 April.
